MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES
Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, when a soldier, named Percy Holmes, who is attached to the llth_ Reinforcements, was charged with obtaining 10s. at Picton by means of a valueless cheque. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who appeared for the accused, was prepared to put forward an admission, but. as Inspector Hendrev. mentioned that other charges were pending, the accused was remanded until to-day. ASSAULT. James Ouilfoyle, a middle-aged man, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully assaulting George Nash, and was remanded for sentence until Friday next. MAINTENANCE. Alexander Moore was sentenced to six days' imprisonment for disobedience of an order'of the Court for tho maintenance of his wife. Ho was given the option of keeping up weekly payments of 225. 6d.. the warrant to be suspended if the payments are forthcoming. William Percy Salmon was remanded on bail until March 31. on a charge of disobeying a maintenance order. VAGRANCY. Florence Emma Emery, against whom there were previous convictions, was convicted of drunkenness and of being a rogue and a vagabond. She was sent to gaol for one year. MISCELLANEOUS. James Hall was fined 10s. for provoking a breach of tue peace" in. Willis Street, and ordered to pay 10s. 6d., interpreter's fee, in connection with the case of a Greek, named Marinos Berdebes, against whom an information of a similar nature was dismissed. For being absent without leave from tho steamer Opawa, William Milne was sentenced to two days' imprisonment, and ordered to pay 7s. Court costs. Arthur Hutchinson, on a charge of helpless drunkenness, was romanded for curative treatment in gaol. Maud O'Connor, charged with drunkenness, did not appear, and was ordered to forfeit her bail. • JUVENILE COURT. In the Juvenile Court, a boy 15 years of age was committed to tho Buriiham Industrial School, on charges of theft of money. Another boy, eleven years of age, was proved to have stolon several sums of money from the dressingrooms at Thoi'ndon Baths. Ho _was ordered twelve strokes of tho birch, and will havo to report weekly to the Probation Officer. CIVIL BUSINESS. Mr. W. G: Riddoll, S.M., gave judgment by default for the plaintiffs in the following undefended civil claims: — Jack Jacobus v. T. Carter, 17s. 6d., costs 55.; Dr. L. C. Hales v. Dan Elias, £1 lis. Gd., costs 55.; Nellie St. Leger v. Henry Smith, £11, costs £1 12s. (3d.; British General Electric Light Company, Ltd., v. Ralph Stanley Lewis Herbert Henry Blake, and Edward Charles White, £27 16s. 7d., costs £4; J. T. Horn, Ltd., v. A. W. M. Salaman, £6 os. 10d., costs £1 3s. 6d.; George Alfred Yarrell v. Mrs. L. Matthews, 18s., costs Bs.; Mary Stuart Mitchell v. Francis L. Kerwan, £9 75., costs 135.; William Jno. Haines v. Walter Styles, £1 15s. 9d., costs 55.; Publio Trustee v. John Lindsay, £3 6s. Bd., costs 10s.; Karori Borough Council v. Mrs. Margaret Rothwell, £11 10s. 4d., costs 165.; City Council v. Jno. Henry Williams, £9 '3s. 7d., costs Bs.
