During the fighting at Verdun two French machine-gnus defending a ravine got jammed. The Germans were preparing .to attack, and other guns were not available. A lieutenant called for fifteen men, and directed that the gap he filled by one it a time, who Wore to fire "like the devil" till disabled. None hesitated. The first fired three shots and then dropped with a bullet in his head. A second followed. He fired five shots before he fell. Tho third emptie'd the magazine before being ivinged, getting ten Germans. By the time assistance arrived there were only three volunteers left.
