• On Friday morning, a man. a stranger t<i the town, attempted to rob the till at /Mr. P. Lorenaen's bakery establishment. Mrs. Lorenzen was in the back of tho premises at the time, and the culprit did not know tho working of tho patent alarm till, arid tlio bell sounfling raised thei alarm. The offender decamped, but was very shortly apprehended by the police. The Carterton Amateur Swimming Club met on Thursday evening, when the -balance-sheet of the recent carnival was presented, showing a credit of £12 In accordance with a resolution passed at a previous meeting, 50 per cent, of this profit goes to support the Soldiers' Queen in the Masterton Carnival contest. , • ' . The Wairarapn Automobile Association on -Thursday afternoon tendered a welcome home in tlie form of a garden party to the returned soldiers. There was' a large gathering of the soldiers and tlibir friends, and tho picturesque grounds of Carrington House were gaily decorated with bunting. Speeches were delivered by Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., tlio Hon. W. Fraser, Captain D. Simpson, and Messrs. J. W. Card and W. Howard Booth. During tlio proceedings Mr. M'Nielage, a young man from the district who had enlisted but had to undergo an'operation to fit him for active • service, which unfortunately -was followed, by complications, and resulted in tho loss of a leg, was presonted with a cheque for £300 as a token of sympathy from tho Wairarapa settlors,.
