Thomas Jainieson, manager for the estate of James Jamioson, deceased, sued J. L'hillips for possession and rent (£ls 7s. Od.). Judgment was entered lor plaintiff,-with costs 2s. lis. DEFENDED ACTION. Subsequently the Magistrate commoucod tho hearing of a defended action, in which tho plaintiff was "Ward l'earce, fanner, of l'aliautanui, and tho defendant Has Harry Eastwood, farmer, of' Porirua. Mr. T. S. Weston appeared for tho plaintiff, wliilo Mr. A. A. S. Mentcath appeared for the defendant. The claim was for £50 6s. 3d. alleged to bo duo for damage done to tho plains tiff's motor-car by collision with certain of tho defendant's horsos, which were wandoring at largo on tho WellingtonJ'orinia Road at U p.m. on December li) last. ■ For tho defence it was contended that there was no proof that tho horses concerned in the collision wero owned by the defendant, who also raised the defence that the driver of tho plaintiff's car was not following tho ordinary rules of the road at'the time of vho. accident. Decision was reserved. POLICE OASES. Police cases were taken before Mr.. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. Herman Henry Grell, 34 years of ago, and Eva Grell, 27 years of age, pleaded not guilty tti a charge of keeping a brothel in Charlton Avenue; After hearing' the evii dence, the Magistrate was satisfied that convictions should be recorded, ' and cadi accused was fined £10, tho alternative in each case being a, month's imprisonment. Delia Burrows, and Charles Burrows, who were arrested in Taranaki Street oarly yesterday •morning by Constable M'Kolycy, were charged with assaulting William Fitzpatrick so as to cause him actual bodily harm. As Fitzpatrick was not able to appear, the accused wore, remanded for a week. Mr. Tf. F. O'Leary applied for bail and asked that it should bo light in tho case of the female accused. The Magistrate fixed bail for Charles Burrows at £200, and a surety of a like amount, and bail for Delia Burrows at £25 and a surety of a like amount.
William Simes appeared for sentence on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. - Inspector Hendrcy stated that police inquiries went to suggest that Simes was lazy and worthless, and although well able to work, he would not seek employment, but preferred to beg for his living. A sentence of one' month's imprisonment was imposed. ' •
James Robertson, who appeared for sentence on a charge of begging alms, was the subject of a favourable renort I>V Chief-Detective Boddam, who stated that Robertson's • lapse was apparently the result of a bout of drinking. The j Magistrate recorded a conviction and I ordered tho accused to come up for scntenco when called upon. JUVENILE COURT. In the Juvenile Court yesterday, a boy nine years of age, was cautioned and discharged for stealing a quantity of wood on Thursday last. MASTERTON CRIMINAL SESSIONS. By Telegraph—(Special Correspondent.! Masterton, Maroh 21. The case in which Iren Polsen, of Groytown, was charged With perjury, was concluded in the Supreme Court to-day. The jury, after a short retirement, brought in a verdict of not guilty, and accused was acquitted. Three soldiers from the ,Fcatherston Camp, named Charles Morven, William Davis Creamer, and Peter Bradley, wero charged with breaking and entering hotel premises at Greytown and stealing a quantity of liquor. Tho hearing of the case was not concluded when the Court rose.
. NAPIER SUPREME COURT. By Association. Napier, March 21. In the Supreme. Court Percy M'Quillan was sentenced to three years' hard labour for indecent assault.
