EXPENDITURE CURTAILED,

Auckland, March 21. .Referring to the progress of the Waiuku railway construction works at Patumahoo, Mr. Massey said that fof financial and other reasons the Government had cut down the railway expenditure during the war. The Public Works Department employed 3000 men less now than six months ago. Since the first sod was turned in the Waiuku Hue, £39,000 had been expended. At the end of the financial year the full vote of £40,000 would have been spent. It was estimated that the line would cost £120,000 to complete. He had not the fainteßt doubt that the line would pay.
