fyNGAIO CLUB. / The second annual meeting of the above club was .held last Wednesday ovening, there being a good attendance of members. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 9s. 2d. The annual report showed that the past year had been one of very satisfactory progross. Although both tho home-and-home matches with the more seasoned Wellington South Club wore lost, a markedly better _ showing was made than in the previous year, when these fixtures wore instituted. Twelve members took part iu the annual handicap tourney, in whioh the handicapping was so well done that three players tied for first piaco. As a .result of the play-off, S. Wild took firßt prize, W, J. Carman second prize, and E. E. Hioks third prize. Later in the year a scratch tourney was held, the club championship being won by W. J. Carman. He thus holds rung lon the club's ladder, which, it is interesting to note, was. made by the club's hon secretary, Mr. A. S. Green, out of timber from the wreck of the s.s. Penguin, each of the twenty players' names being' shown on a separate electroplate shield. Rungs 2, 3, 4, and 5 • are helu by Messrs. Topp, AVild, Hicks, senr., and Lindsay respectively. The two game 3 which are being played by correspondence with the Whangarei Chess Club are Being very evenly contested, and each had reached an interesting stage. The report and balancev sheet wore adopted unanimously. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: —Patrons, Messrs. R. A. Wright, M.P., C. C. Crump (Mayor of Onslow), B. Lynricberg, and J. E. Fitzgerald; president, Mr. A. 13. Topp; vice-president, Mr. Hick's, senr.; hon. secretary, Mr. \. S. Green; hon. treasurer, Mr. E. E. Hicks. Mr. Banks, who has been treasurer From trie foundation of the club, wns unable to offer his valued services in the ooming year. Two new members were elected, Best wishes for the success of the coming season wero received by letter from > Mr. W. J. Hicks, one of the cluFs members, who has enlisted and the front. It was decided to commence the annual tournament next Monday. • The leading prize is the trophy donated by Mr. E. N. Sutherland, of Ngaio.
WELLINGTON SOUTH CHESS CLUB. This club's championship tourney was advanced another stage last Thursday, the sixth round being noted mainly for a finely-played game between the Wo leaders, Messrs. Purchas and A. Clark, which ended- in a draw. Considerable interest attaches to the final round, which is set down for decision on Thursday evening.
