MARINE ENGINEERS' CONDITIONS
WAGES AND OVERTIME. Some little dissatisfaction, chiefly in respect to wages and overtime, haß been abroad among marine engineers on the New' Zealand coast for a time past. The Institute of Marine Engineers presented the men's case to the employers, and some finality was reach* ed last week, when a special meeting of the Institute was held to consider the reply of the employers. The meeting adjourned without a definite decision being arrived at, but it is considered more than probable that the men will accept the company's offerß, which, it is understood, include the following conditions:—
15 per cent, increase for senior engineers. .
12J per cent, increase for juniors. .Eight-hour day, with overtime at the rate of 2s. per hour. Payment of Is. Gd. ,per hour for "keeping ship," i.e., standing by while the ship is in port.
