The Queen distributed Queen Alexandra's shamrocks to the Irish Guards. The King inspected the Guards and paid a tribute to their splendid achievements in the first campaign, by which they fully maintained the high traditions of tho Guards' Brigade. The King recalled their heroism at the Mons retreat and the critical days at Ypres, -when, as Lord Cavan wrofe, "the survivors showed the enemy that tho Irish Guards nnist be reckoned with, however hard hit. After twentyeight days' incessant fighting against heavy odds, tho first battalion came out iess than a company strong, and with onlv four officers." "This," said His ' Majesty, "is a glorious tribute to tho loyalty and endurance of the Irish. You have shown that the shamrock stands for loyalty, • oourage, and endurance in adversity. May it carry you to victory."
