BANK OFFICER SHOT
CRIMINAL ACT OF A MINER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, March 17. William Joy, a miner, incensed at receiving notes in exchange for,gold at the London Bank of Australia at Ararat, entered the bank, angrily referred to the notes, and fired a gun-shot, which lodged in the arm of the accountant, Mr. Demully. Joy arrived at the bank armed with a double-barrelled gun, a revolver, and a long knife, and presented a 4oz. nugget. AVhen informed that the practice was to pay iu notes, without warning ho began shooting. Demully was shot while reaching for his revolver. He pluckily used his uninjured arm, tiring at his assailant. Constable Graham commandeered a civilian's (Moorfoot's) trap and chased Joy, who opened fire on their approach and- wounded Graham and luoorfoot in the; fegs. Taking advantge of the misfire of a cartridge, Graham rushed out and knocked Joy down with the butt of a revolver.
