MASTERTON RACES FIBST DAY'S EVENTS. By Telegraph.—tSpccial Correspondent.) Masterton; March lfi. Tho first day of the Autumn Meeting ol' the Mnetcrtou Bacing Club was favoured with glorious weather, and a largo attendance. The totalisiitor investments reached .616,238, compared with .£13,229 last year. Watt, tho jockey, sustained a fracture of the leg as the result of a collision with another jockey. For the Maiden Hack' liaoe thore were' numerous scratchings. The Trenthamtraiued Mascot was backed down to a very short, price, but after jumping out well and leading for a furlong, with Altercation and Lady Genoral, she then wont back and could do no better than finish sixth. Lady General and Galore (All Black—Orlay) led till well into tho straight, when the latter fell back, and Probation and Cello (Achilles— Singer) became dangerous. Over the last half-fur-long Cello and Lady General were hard ' at it,- and the Achilles gelding got the verdict by a head. Probation was a length -away, and then came Galore, Altercation, and Mascot. Another very hot favourite, in Chillies, wont under in tho March Handicap, by a narrow margin, to Watchful, whilo Master Achilles, who should have won, was another jhead awav in the third place. At the start, Watchful led olf irom the favourite and Jean Laddo, with Master Achilles and Pariform whipping the field. In. tho straight Chillies appeared to havo the measure of Watchful, but the latter stuck to his task and wore down tho Achilles horse. Master Achillea, who came from a long way back, was right up with • them. Jean Laddo was fourth. Down ham and Botanist were withdrawn. Chillies was offered for salo after the race, because his owner is going to the front with the next Eeinforcements, but at 325 guineas he' was passed in. The favourite in tho Mile Hack Handicap whs Maraetotara, but she, too, went under to an- outsider, in Franbonnet, owiied by Mr. W. Cooper, a steward of the club, whose colours were successfully carried by Sunbonnet, dam of tho winner. Ormesby led the favourite to the straight entrance whore ho fell back beaten, and finished last. Maraetotara and Lord Laddo were fighting out the finish, from the distance, when Franbonnet came with a late run. Won by a neck.- Lord Laddo was the same distance away, and then camo Whakahaki. Eongora and Lady Nolan ran badly. Jem and Discussion weTe withdrawu from the Cup,' leaving eight runners. It was a good-conditioned field, and no fault .could be found With any of them. Leonta, was the favourite, followed by Orleans, Montana, and Bertrada ■ in • that '• order. A splendid start was effected in front of the stand, the : first to show out being Montana and Orleans. The latter was chopped back at tho mile, and down the back C-ampeador and Montana lea Bertrada, with tho favourite and Hiwitapu bringing-up the rear. Leonta stumbled badly twice, and lost a lot of ground.Campeador was done with on the turn, and Montana led into the straight with a break of two lengths. Then The Summit, Bertrada, and Orleans challenged, and the last-named got within a neck of Montana, who had. been eased up. C. Price, who rode' Montana,, was on Leonta when that horse won last year.

The 'Ruamaliunga Hack Handicap was a very even betting race, and "when the machino closed there was littlo difference between Bairnsdale, Matizoltov, and Lady Black. Prior to the start, J. Watts, rider of Whisperer, received a kick which broke Ms leg, and H. Young was substituted. ■ At the start Miraculous led from Happiness, with Lady Black and Matizoltov next. With two furlongs gone Otter rushed to the front and led into the straight. Here Lady Black and Matizoltov 'got clear of the ruck, but. wore nnabls to reach Otter, who won by a couple of-lengths. Lady Black was a neck clear of Matizoltov, and then came Whisperer and Kooment. Bairnsdale ran badly, but it transpired that lie was interfered with, and an inquiry was held into the matter and adjourned. All the acceptors went to. the post for the Bracelet, Melodist and Atruatoro being evenly backed. The raco was a processibn, for, after allowing Critic to lead to the turn, Melodist then went to the front and won with his head in his ohest. Silenus, a good-looking three-year-old, by Signor from Polycaste, was second, and Critic third. The first favonrite to score during the day was Ararat, who won tho Opaki Welter' after covering a lot of extra ground, due to getting run out at the home turn. Zetes led down the back from Scoroh and Patronale, but at the half-mile he gave way to' tho latter; who carried pn the running to the straight entrance. Then Ararat, who had got stopped at the back, appeared on the outside, and easily holding off Jem, who came with a late run, won easily. Discussion was a fair third, and then came -Patronale, Black Lupin, and Scorch. This made the fourth success for C. Price during the day. Interlude and Marimba were tlie selections in the Dash Hack Handicap.' The latter jumped out first from a strag, gling start, and though Carlysian caught her a furlong from the post, the topweight struggled on and won by half a length. Watt ha!s had tho misfortune to lose Night Owl (All Black—La Nottc), the full-sister to Blackall, who died on board the steamer Manuka on tho run from Sydney on Tuesday night. The filly was bad the first night at sea, and, notwithstanding every attention, she died on Tuesday. She, had not raced during her stay in. Australia, but was to have been placed in work on her arrival at Hastings. \
