Fierce fires in the flax swamps south pf Palmerston North on Saturday caused great concern and anxiety 'in tho neighbourhood, reports the "Manawatu Daily Times." Tim flames spread quickly, and despite the strenuous woric of a number of ■men from the various mills a great deal of damage was done. The fire ran over a portion of Mr. Wall's property and Mr. Spiors's holding,, and also invaded the Seifert Company's Miranui block. Mr. Spiers was the greatest loser, practically the whole of his millablo flax, covering nearly two hundred acres,, going up in sinoko. About 15 to 20 acres at Miranui were destroyed. Large bodies of workers from the various mills responded promptly to tho alarm, and though their efforts were made extremely arduous by high changeable winds, tliey ~re to bo congratulated on their achievement in keeping the conflagration in a comparatively limited range. Tlicy .eventually got tho fire out after moßfc strenuous efforts. At the Northampton Sessions, a man sued a firm for wages in lieu of notice, It was stated that he was the only uneiirolled man in his shop, and that as the others threatened to striko, tho ili-m had, no alternative but to tlißinlss him, The case was amicably settled,
