IN REPLY TO "THE THROTTLINC GRIP."
; Sir,—ln yours of yesterday's date, I notice a "letter, '.'The Throttling Grip," . though I don't see what is "throttled" and'what is "gripped." In reply, speaking as a country man., times are very different now to "when the penny postage , was. introduoed, and we have weightier matters than party politics to think about in the present • fight for y our existence. ' That the penny postage was j a boon no one will dispute, but that it (lias. anything to do with cheap fares to - 'Australia or anywhere else is absurd, iff "Reform" thinks,, he must realise [that instead of fares being reduced, | there is every reason why they should j be inoTeased, not only to Australia, but I any part of the-, world, The cost of I manning and equipping the ships has increased, I feel sure, quite . 50 per cent., and the risk of loss from enemy's vessels is also considerable.. Insurance rates are high, and everything tends towards raising rates instead of lowering 'them, as suggested by "Reform." In conclusion, I do not think the present ' a suitable time for making pleasure trips to Australia. If a man has money . to spare, it can be well applied in supflementing some of the Patriotic .Funds, n these.strenuous times, pleasure and amusement should be put on one side, mid w,e should all do what we can for our King and country.—l am, etc., 1 F.
