WAYS AND MEANS.
Sir, —I see Mr. Massey is -willing to five our railwayman the 1 one shilling a day they ask for if ("ways and means" mill allow. I should like to suggest many ways in which the money could easily he raifltsd Tyithout extra taxation on the poorer classes, who now find it hard enough to make ends_ meet in j many honi£s. In the first place, why '■ all the picture shows and other, amusements, the racing clubs, sports clubs, etc. Secondly, all unmarried men over 36, who are able but don't go to' the front. , There ars a great many of this class in the, country,' who are better able to pay extra taxes than the , married men with wives and ohildren to [provide for. Then there are married ■oouples who have no and are 'well off; and, thirdlyf'cancel all-free railway passes to M.P.'s., most of whonr are quite able to pay their own fares,' and so Telierve the Government of that expense. Many would find they oMild do with much less travelling about, I 'dare say; if their faxes 1 came out of .their own pockets. j All .these classes I have mentioned • "are better able to stand extra taxation than ; Civil l Servants,'.'; working »: people, .jnd married /men, who have wires and children to provide for, and who in'so doing are "doing, their bit." We are .all ready and willing to-help our Government in'these hard times, and most of ns economise in every way we .can. [n' many homes butter; eggs, and meat are only ah extra now and then, so surely wo could do without so many 'picture shows, race meetings, etc., or, ijf the people will have them, let them %e taxed.—l am, 'etc., ; FAIR PLAY.
