Another lull is reported in the Verdun battle. The Germans have for the time relaxed their efforts on the front where in the closing days of last week they strove in vain, and at fearful cost, to penetrate' the French defences.. They are reported to be now bringing up heavy ' reinforcements in preparation for a renewal of the assault. The French'claim that they have had decidedly the best' of the air encounters, which have been numerous in the battle-area. A stir, of aotion is indicated on the Isonzo front, though little detail news is at the moment being allowed to pass by the Italian tensors. It is reported, however, that the troops are enduring extreme privations, heavy Tain flooding the trenches and destroying field-works on the, mountain slopes. Suggestive activities are reported by the enemy on the Russian northern front, and by the Russians in Bessarabia. Some-
what contradictory reports are given of the internal state'of Turkey. x There are further predictions'of a sortie by the German fleet. l Important developments are reported in East Africa, where British troops haveidislodged an enemy force from.a strong position, and are conducting a brisk pursuit.
