Mr. Thomson was a Stipendiary Magistrate before he became one of the Public Service Commissioners. Dr. R. Cyril E. Atkinson, M.A., :M.D., D.P.H., who has been appointed ( Commissioner of Public Health for West Australia, was educated.at Christchnrch Boys' High School, Canterbury College, and Edinburgh and Cambridge Universities. He is a captain in the West Australian 'Medical Corps (Mounted Fqrces), and Chief Medical Transport i Officer at Fremantje. Dr. Atkinson is a son of 'Mr. Atkinson, formerly of Chri6tchnrch Telephone Exchange. At the Lambton Quay Station last evening late Senior-Sergeant Mullaney, who has been appointed subinspector at Christchurcli, was, on the eve of his departure for the south, made the recipient of a handsome silver tea service as a mark of esteem from the Wellington staff. The presentation was made by Inspector Hendry, who wished the reoipient every success in his new sphere of action. SubInspector M'Kinnon also referred to Sub-Inspector MuUatiey's many good qualities and assiduous attention to duty, to which remarks a suitable' response was made.

The death occurred at Auckland last week of Mr. JohnI'.1'. Laugmuir, Government Inspector of Surveys. The • deceased, who was 61 years of age, came to. New Zealand from Melbourne 34 years ago. He became a surveyor, arid carried on his -professional duties in Otago. He was subsequently chief draughtsman in tho , Government service at New Plymouth; and occupied the position for three'years. For'the past ten years ho held 'the post of Government Inspector of Surveys. Ha leaves a widow, three sons, and one daughter. Mr. William Riley, a well-known resident of Wellington, died at his daughter's residence, Kelbnrn l'arado, on Monday evoning. Tho deceased was a printer by trade, and in his youthful days fie was apprenticed to Blackwood's, of Edinburgh. Late in the '50's he left the Old Country for Victoria, and 6ome years later he settled in Otai/o, where he was a _ comjiosit'or on t-ho "Otago Daily Times." He was one of the pioneers of the Gabriel's Gully Tush, and afterwards he went to the West Coast goldfieldsj where he ran a, small paper and did* the Government printing. Later he lived in Lytteltoh, and established a small newspaper there, but tho publication. did not survive very long. He then entered the employ of the Government, mid for some time was official printer at the Lyiielton Gaol. About the late 'BO's ho loft Lyttelton, and became a canvasser for the Government Life Insurance Department in Otago. In ISBP lie transferred to Wellington, and un till a few years ago ho was still employed by the Government Life'lnsnrance Departmont as canvasser.. For twenty-eight, years the late Mr. Ililey was a member of the Wellington Bowling Club. One widowed daughter, Mrs. David Wylio, survives him,
