An immediate advance wil bo made to the factories of the full, current market_ value for this butter, less trade commission, this involving an expenditure 011 the part of tlio Government of £60,000. Beyond financing the scheme in this respect, the-Government will take no further responsibility.,, "The. profits or. losses under the scheme' will revert to the factories supplying the butter. Many of tho details in connection with the sehemo are yet to bo worked out, ,but the Government is receiving the hearty cooperation of leading men in the trade. "As well as financing tho scheme, the' Government has undertaken—provided local requirements are met and reasonable amounts are being put by for'the winter—to' advocate the fullest right of export, interstate' and oversea, of \ all; surplus supplies. To this end wo . have already advised tlio Minister of Customs. that this State has 110 objection to an immediate shipment of all the surplus second-class butter in store at the present time. Immediately the Government is satisfied that the supplies of first-grade being put up are reasonably sufficient to meet winter requirements, we will ourselves allow interstate , trade, ■ and urge the Commonwealth to permit export oversea of any balance." ;
The Hastings Tobacco _ Company's plantation at Olive Grange is just now looking at its best (says the "Hawke's Eay "Tribune"). ' Tlie crop, which* is a good one, is now nearly ready for harvesting, and is expected to yield at least 90,0001b. The area under culti-, ration is 100 acres. New sheds have recently been erected to store . last year's crop'and to make further room for this year's output. Tlie. season has not'been altogether a favourable one, on account of the dryness, but notwithstanding this the crop is absolutely free from insect and blight. The new building at the Port, Napier, is completed, and machinery is now being installed for,.the manufacture of the tobacco for market, and it is expected to start''operations, in a few weeks' time.
