HIGH HONOUR FOR A NEW ZEALAND OFFICER
The news that Brigadier-General Sir Andrew Russell has been promoted to the command of the New Zealand Division at the fp;u, with the rank of Major-General, wall be rc.id with much bv this distinguished New Zealand jprritovial officer's many friends and admirers. Before the war Golonel Russell —as he was then —commanded the Wellington Mounted Rifle Brigade, and his work at'the trainin"' camps and in manoeuvres was regarded as highly efficient and thoroughly sound. Since his departure for the front little has been heard of him—or of any other individual officer owing to the anonymity with which the operations are veiled by the censor—but the recent announcement that he had been knighted indicated service in the field. Now comes the news of his most recent advancement. The fact that a New Zealand officer—and of the Territorial Force, as distinguished from the professional side of our defence systemhas by sheer merit in the fighting line earned promotion to the command of a division of field troops comprised of the men of his own country, affords a deep sense of satisfaction and pride.
