—• —♦ 1 — MEETING IN- CANTERBURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch. March 12. At a fully-attended meeting of the Canterbury Branch of the Amalgamated 1 Socioty of Railway Servants to-day the following resolution was passed unanimously:—"That this large meeting of railwayman strongly _ urges upon the executive' the necessity for an increase in pay of not less than Is. per day, and that failing an immediate favourable reply from the Government drastic action 'be taken; further, that a special conference of delegates' from every branch of the A.S.R-.S. be called to consider .waj-s and means; that this board has every confidence m the Executive Council, and would urge the advisability of their attending the conference as suggested in the United Federation of Labour circular." FITTERS AND TURNERS AT PETONB. It is stated the men engaged in the fitting and turning .department of the Government workshops at Petono decided, on Friday, to refuse to work overtime (as requested from to-day) unless their claim for an extra shilling per day was granted, a reasonable time allowed off for tea (hitherto only a quarter of an ljpur had been allowed), and one day per week free from overtime. A further meeting held en Saturday was addressed by the locomotive engineer, and as a result the men agreed to work under protest. It is understood' that the extra time for tea and the day per week free from overtime have been granted.
