PICNICS
The annual picnic of The Dominion siaff was held on Saturday at Muntai Park, in perfect weather. There were over a hundred present, and a most enjoyable day ivas spent in games, sports for the children, and bathing. lhe luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements were in the hands of a capable committee, the al fresco meals, served on the sand dunes within sight of the Wellington Heads, being among _tho most pleasant features of an altogether pleasant outing- , The juvenile races were m tho bands of Messrs. G. Thompson and A. K Wright, Messrs. A. Sando and H. I linimer acting as judges. Much merriment was caused in tho competition "slicing tho Kaiser's head." About 40 patriotic youngsters, qrmed with an imitation sword, in turn attempted wliat appeared to be an easy task. But each competitor was blindfolded and turned several ways before lie was allowed to "rid the world of the terrible Hun." The manner in which tho "sword" was eagerly grasped, the stern look on the childish face, and the determined step, drew .forth ' IUI^JI plause from the onlookers. _ Finally tlio judge awarded the first prize to Arcllid. Sando, inn., the second to Hoot. Uuttey, and the third to Sadie M Sporran. About 150 adults and children attended the gathering, and the committed, spared no effort to make tho day enjoyable.
PETONE WORKING MEN'S CLUB. The annual picnic of the I'otone Working Men's Club was held at the Hutt Park on Saturday, and.proved a : great success. There was ail enormous attendance, and during the afternoon a kinenia picture of the proceedings was taken in connection with the scheme of advertising tlio Hm.t \ alley. Apologies wero received from the 1 rime Minister, Sir J.. G. Ward, the Mayor of Wellington, and others. The » ellington Club was represented by tho president (Mr. Mace) and several members, and the local officials did _ nil that was desired to make the function a success. Mr. G. Finlav acted as sports liandieapper, Sir. H. Arnold starter, and Air J. May assistant starter. _ Messrs. Aplin, Clark, Jowett, nfnd Smith were tho judges, Mr. J. Richardson clerk ot the course, and the. juvenile 6portswero in tho capable hands of Messrs. Speiico, O'Neill, Taylor, Neivland, Dunne, Dewliurst and Leadbetter. The motor traffic was under the care of Mr. Owen. Mr. W. Elder, as picnic secretary, filled the position excellently. The results of tho sports were _as follow:—Maiden race (150 yds.): Senior, 1: Childs, 2. Stepping the chain (ladies): Mrs. Drury, 66ft. Jin., 1; Mrs Ross, 66ft. Bin., 2. Crayfish race (100 vds., running backwards). —Whitley, 1; Drury, 2. Ladies' shoe race: Miss Ureif, 1; Miss Ross, 2. Members' race (40 to 50 years): Hancock, 1; Monev, 2. Married ladies' race: Mrs. Smith"; 1; Mrs. Finlayson, 2: Mrs. Uren, 3. Club handicap: Chads, 1; Whitley, 2. Single ladies'race: Miss Hutchesou, 1; Miss Uren, 2 Gent, s boot race: Hancock, 1; Greene, 2. Threading the needle (ladies): Miss Apps, 1; Miss Edlin, 2. Members' race (over 50 years): Jowett-, 1; "_atson, 2. Married ladies' race: Mrs. Uren, 1; Mrs. Hoskings, 2. Youths'racQ: Smith, 1; Senior, 2. Committeemen's race-: Dewhurst, 1; Clark, 2. An orchestra played selections throughout the day, under the leadership of Mr. G. Ninness.
