PEOPLE'S GOLF LINKS
, A MUCH APPRECIATED BOON. There is no question that tho City Council has created a lino asset in providing municipal golf links at Berhampore, and. from those who havo played on them they only need to bo well known to be appreciated. The links are being fairly well patronised by a number of people who aro onthusisatic in their praise. A- Municipal Golf Club has been formed, with Mr. Whitehead us secretary, ana l already a couple of competitions 'have been played with great success. In the opinion of somo of the players tho council has made an error in not making tho links open on Saturday afternoon to holders of season tickets, for the simple reason that the people who would purchase such tickets—mostly those Who reside iu the district—are those who are free on Saturday afternoon. The caretaker (Mr. Hollis) is to be congratulated on the condition of the links generally. The greens are, as might bo expected in a first- season, a little rough, but as a ivholo tho links are in fine condition. Recently an English tourist, a Mr. Johnston, spent three weeks in Wellington, and lie was so taken with the links that he practically spent tho whole of his timo on thom. The Golf Club's Committee intends to approach the Reserves .Committee with a requost to allow soldiers in uniform,to play free of charge.. Already many of the men from all parts of Neiv Zealand have visited and plnyed on tho links, and it is only a reasonable request that they might be t allowod tho freedom of the links whilst they are on leave in Vell'm"I ton.
