THE HIBBERT JOURNAL
.:. '-_, -.— —fr— -— The January of the "Hibberti Journal" (Williams and Norgate) opens with an article by Count Goblet D'Alviella "On Some Moral Aspects and Issues dt the Present War." - In pointing out the folly of a prematura geace, lie states that an indecisive end to flie war would mean that- the whole of Europe would sink 'more and mors' ■under such a burden of armaments ■ thait the nations would sigh for another war to decide once for all whether the world is to remain free or to become the slave of Germany. Professor G. T. Ladd contributes an interesting ar- . tide on "The Human Mind versus the German Mind." Various aspects of the war are dealt with bj' other contributors.'. Professor Pringle-Pattison discusses 7£.<\ Balfour's Gifford Lectures on "Theism and Humanism."One of the brightest articles in the number is Dr. C. A. ilercier's reply to Mr. Hugh Elliot's article on "Vital- - ism," in "Science Progress." Ho gives a very effective answer to the theory. that men arc mere automata whose conduct, is determined by solely physical processes in- which the mind has no' part or lot-beyond that of a' passive spectator. Dr. Mercier refuses to be overawed by the "bugaboo, of, scientific impossibility, especially in tho. realm of V metaphysics." ' He tells Mr: Elliot that he "need not troubloto prove that his arguments are scientific: let him show that they are reasonable; let him show that they are valid; let him show that they are borne out by the evidence; their .'scientific', value.' will take care, of itself." , Besides other articles, the issue, contains a number of interesting discussions;. surveys -of current thought, and signed reviews.
