HYMNS FOR TIME OF WAR.
■Mr. D. L. Lee-Elliott writes as follows, to tho X/ondon *'Times" t —j\ln.nY liymns have been written for tin's time of war; some good, bad, and indifferent. But quite one of the best I have yet come across—(Bishop Boyd Carpenter's "0. God, the Strength of Those Who Fight" is very fine) —is one, not written l for this war, but written- in 1891 by, E. L. Hosmer, an American Unitarian' minister. It is particularly suitable for. those times, when we are passing through "the slow watches of the night:"; Moreover, it emphasises "the day" to which we are looking forward; a very, different day to "the day" whioh has been in the German mind so long. The hymn may be found in the "English) Hymnal" (504). I append it,; hoping that you will kindly find space for it.Thy kingdom come! on bended knfo The passing ages pray; And faithful souls have yearned to eecj On earth that kingdom's day. But the slow watches of the night Not less to God belong: And. for tho everlasting right , The silent stars are strong. And 10, already on tile hills The flags of dawn appear; Gird up your loins, ye prophet souls, Proclaim the day is flear; •The day in whose clear shining lighfl All lyrong shall stand revealed, When justice shall Ik> throned in might, iiul every hurt be healed. /When knowledge hand in hand with! peace, Shall walk the earth' abroad— The day of perfect righteousness, Tha promised day ot Gcd.
