Randall Davidson—who pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy, * in tho Magistrate's Court on Wednesday last, will appear in the Supreme Court for sentence on Monday morning. At yesterday's meeting of the Makarai County Council .a circular was received from the War Necessities Committee - with regard to the sale of liquor in war time and the early closing movement as far as the bars are concerned. The circular included the planks of the campaign: (1) That a wet canteen be established at all military camps in the Wellington military district during the period of the war j and (2) that all hotel and club bars in. the Wellington military area be closed 1 for the - sale of spirituous liquors between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the period of the present war. A blank petition form for signatures of those subscribing to the above was also enclosed. The circular was received, and it was agreed to geb signatures to the petition. Up till .the present the War Relief Association has dealt with 140 applications for relief, and the work continues To thicken up, so that Mr. S. Wills (the secretary), who has been getting along with tho assistance of a typist, is to be given further • clerical assistaiico. Mrs. J. B. Kl'Ewen, who has been • appointed honorary inspector of tho association, has been doing invaluable investigation work, not only in inquiring into such cases that have come under. the notice of the association, but in "digging out" cases, and bringing their needs before tho committee. One recent case she discovered was that of a woman, whose husband (a labourer) had gone to the war, leaving only part, of his wages for the support of herself and five small children. Assistance was at onco granted. Mr. Wills says that there are many of such cases, and the separation allowance of 6d. per day, per child will be a very real help to i many a poor struggling woman, and tha nooner it is granted the better. Children at Masterton aro collecting empty bottles in aid of the Wounded Soldiers'- Fuiid. One hundred dozen bottles comprised one day's haul, this being (as an exchange points out) in a Xo-License district.
