A REVOLVER DUEL
— 1 *-■ - AND AN INTERESTED WATCHER. This is a French story for which tho "Westminster Gazette" is responsible: Once upon a time Brer Hun blew up a mine—in the wrong place. He always does. . Anyway it left a dangerous crater between the two linos, and A Company of tho British sent out an officer on all-fours, it being broad daylight, to explore the ground. An excellent idea, but they unfortunately forgot to tell B Company, on their right, of what they had done, with the result that B also sent out a sub. with the same mission. Let us call them Jones and Brown. Absorbed in (their own stealthiness, neither noticed the progress of the other as'they <ip. proached the crater from opposite directions. Jones was tho first to reach it, and as he crawled in he noticed a head appearing round a boulder on his right. Down he dropped behind a handy bit of cover, just in time to miss a bullet from the direction of the head, which happened to' be Brown's. Then ensued a lively revolver duel, and iho difficulty of accurate shooting with that weapon was not exactly diminished by tho circumstances, with the result that both emptied their chambers several times 1 without getting anywhere near a hit. Whereupon a Gorman officer, who had enjoyed this spectacle from his place of concealment, rose, thanked tho amazed couple for tho entertainment they had afforded him, bowed, and fled for hia lifo back to his own lines.
