AN APPLICATION REFUSED. Mr. D. Eberlet appeared before tho City Council last evening to ask why a license had been refused for an advertising hoarding in Featherston Street, whore others in the vicinity bad been granted such • The Mayor stated that the City Engineer, in forwarding his reply, had acted according to the by-laws. In a report presented later it was stated that Mr. 'Eberlet had used the hoarding beforo lie had obtained permission, and the City Engineer- deemed it was inadvisable La have su«h a hoarding right opposite the entraucc to the General Post Office. Councillor Fuller spoke in favour of Mr. Ebarlet's application, and said that no on* should be refused permission to cract hoardings if they comply with tho by-laws. Ho moved that the matter bo referred back for further consideration. Councillor L. M'lCenzie, in seconding the motion,' said in his mind there was no difference in u hoarding outside the Post Oflice and one outside tlie Town Hall. - He was not one who would be a party to give privileges to ono and refuse them to another. Councillor Hutcbcson said that on account of the vulgarity displayed on the hoardings he would vote against Councillor Fuller's amendment, and woul.i vote against such applications every time. Councilor Harbor said that many of the hoardings were a disgraco to tlio city, and it was a pity they were not dealt with in some more effective way When it rained the paper blew wboiit fhc streets, and the pasto fell on tfii, pavenient!i. Councillor J. E. Fitzgerald said that if Councillor Barber were logical lio would see that all hoardings were abolished. On tho amendment being put it was lost by 10 votes to 6. '
