THE ROUND OF THE CAMPS

TRENTHAH AND FFATHERSTON

NEWS AND NOTES

A new departure was inaugurated itconnection with tho n.c.o.'s of the 14tl Reinforcements, the men of which are now entering camp. The n.c.o.'s foi each Reinforcement go into training ir the camps two months before the men It lias been found that bv the end ol the two months the n.c.o.'s are stale. The taking over of the raw re = eruits and showing them the rudimenfe of soldiering is a rather strenuous task It was therefore decided that for foui days preceding the arrival of tho mei the n.c.o.'s of eacli draft should have leave. This was much appreciated >bi the n.c.o. s of the 14th Reinforcements who returned' from leave last Monday and Tuesday feeling fully refreshed ant ready for work again. Tug-o'-War Teams. Teams for a tug-o'-war to be held al bt. Patrick's Day sports have been ir training in Trentham camp for some time past. It has now been decided bj the Commandant to send only one teati as tho training will be in full swing and it is not desired to interfere witf it m any way. The team that is" seni (nil be the best team ol 1 those in training, and the contests which its selection will involve are expected to make interesting entertainment in the evening hours during this week and nexl Week. In the Mirage. Last Monday was one of the hottesi (lays experienced in tho Wairarapa thie summer, the thermometer heing at about 90 degrees. A peculiar effect ol this still heat was noticeable at Featherston Military Camp. The infantrv training grounds are about half a mile from the camp. Just before midday, the troops, when seen, from the camp looked like mounted infantry, so tall. did each man appear. The regularity oi their marching soon p, U /edi tliem to be infantry, but even then the impression of hugeness was not removed. Each man looked a giant, and cn-cominc masses of such infantry would have had a terrifying effect upon the enemy. Camp Street Sprinkler. The problem of watering the wide streets of Featherston <kmp has been solved by having a street sprinkler, which is drawn by two horses, and throws the water to a great distance on each side. This machine, which is in constant use, is like those that were used in Wellington in the days before wood-blocking was introduced. When the wind from the Featherston hills sings a war song and the dust is prone to whirl and eddy in the wide streets, the soldiers will appreciate the drenching of the streets with cola water.
