_ The-mobilisation of tin 14th Reinforcements is still in progress, and it is not jot known how the draft is going t( pan out, except that an infantry short age js looked upon as a certainty. Infantry are wanted from all parts'. Wei lington City is appealing for more infantry with u'hich to make good iti shortage of half a hundred. Four met were sent to camp yesterday, and othorf are invited to join at once. The Ohristcmirch "Press" report! that slowly but surely the shortage ii the Canterbury quota is,being decreased, and it is now confidently anticipated that for the first time for several month! the Canterbury district will be able ti meet its obligations. The Christchurcl Area Group has made a remarkable recovery during the last few days. Lasl Wednesday, (a week ago) its shortage m 'infantry was 34, oil Saturday thin had been reduced to 22, and last nighi it was 8. The list of local recruits has been swelled hy the enrolment of a numbei of members of the Defence Staff, whe enlisted by request of Headquarters. At midday yesterday quite a consider able batch of men were being examinee by one of the doctors, and a fair proportion of them were passed as fit ,foi active service. Men for Camp. . A conference of local authorities a.nd prominent residents of the King Country, convened by the Waitomo County Council for tho purpose of considering t.he best means, of assisting tho recruiting scheme, was held to-day. The Hon. James Allen (Defence Minister) attended, and addressed the: meeting, explaining the details of the scheme. He appealed. for support to give a final test to the voluntary system. The machinery now being set up would in any case be ready in the event of conscription . being necessary. : A motion, affirming the principle of the now scheme, and pledging it tupport, was carried unanimously. RECRUITING MEETINCS. A recruiting meeting -will be held in the Parochial Hall, karori, this evening. Tho speakers will bo Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P., and Messrs. S. Menteath and \Vm. Perry, LL.B. The Kelburn, Karori, and Northland National Reserve parade takes place this evening, and members,, led by the Patriotic Band, will march from the Johnston Street town boundary to the Karori Hall.
