In tile Supreme Court, opened to-dav, Mr. Justice Edwards regretted the increase in criminal cases. Frederich Thomas Ulp-li pleaded not guilty to a charge-of carnal knowledge and iuclecent assault oil. a Maori girl aged eleven years. In tlic witness box the girl refused to say one word. Without rctir ing, the jury returned a verdict of "Not Guilty'." Ngha. Eangi, charged with carnal knowledge of a girl under 18, pleaded "not guilty, and ivas discharged. Henry Baker, charged with entering a dwelling with intent to commit a crime, and with assaulting Sarah Masters, an old lady, was found guilty oil the first count and not guilty on the second. Sentence was deferred.
