ANZAC DAY
a COMMEMORATION IN WELLINGTON. "Anzac Day"—April 25 —tho historic day on which tho New Zealand and Australian forces landed at Anzac Cove, in Gallipoli, to earn undying fame as fighters against fearlul odds, is to be commemorated in some suitable way in Wellington. The Mayor (Mr. J, P. Luke) said yesterday that he thought it only due to those who had fought so bravely at Gallipoli from April 25 of last year onwards, should bo remembered in some manner worthy of the occasion. There wore those noule men who gave their lives and who now lie buried on the Peninsula, whose deeds would not, and should not, be forgotten. Mr. Luke said he did not care to go 'closely into any details about the celebration. Those would bo discussed at a meeting of mayors of neighbouring boroughs and chairmen of county councils and town boards which ho was summoning next week. He has issued the following letter to those gentlemen:— "I am writing to the mayors of boroughs and chairmen of county councils and town boards, adjacent to the city to meet in my room on Monday next, tho 13th inst., at 3 p.m., to cousider proposals to suitably celebrato Anzac Day (April 25). lam also writing a member of the Government and a representative of tho military authorities to bo present. I shall be glad if you can make it convenient to attend, "and cooperate in the movement.—Yours faithfully J. P. Luke, Mayor of Wellington. Mr. Luke hopes that a scheme will bo arranged whereby the occasion may bo made a red-letter day in all tli'o places, with celebrations on lines similar to those followed in Wellington.
