WELLINGTON SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP. The fourth round of tlie tourney now in progress to decide the championship of the Wellington South Chess Club was contested on Thursday evening, when Allen won from Harper, Purchas from Berry,„ Clark from Armstrong, and Douglas from Thompson. There are three moro rounds to bo played, and four games in arrear also require to be accounted for. Mr. Purchas is leading, with four clear wins, closely followed by Messrs l . Clark, Douglas, and Allen. An interesting finish may be looked for, Mr. Purchas having yet to meet Messrs. Allen, Thompson, and Clark. "A prominent American player visited London a few years ago, and'was particularly struck ivith tho number of strong amateurs he mot. His verdict was that while Great Britain might lose a match of five-a-side against the United States, at they would win easily, aJid at 500-a-side they would sweep tho board, and that , tho samo thing would happen against any country in the world."—"Chess Year Book. As a result of its patriotio tournament now in progress the Auckland. Chess Club has been enabled to contribute £13 13s. to the'fund for the relief of wounded soldiers. "11l a recent articlo in the 'Daily Mail,', Dr. E. F. Dillon wrote that 'King Ferdinand's hatred of Russia is as strong as his contempt for the Bulgarian politicians, whom he moves backwards and forwards like pawns on tho political chess board.' This 'unorthodox treatment of the pawns furnishes further proof that King Ferdinand does not play the game."—London "Punch."-
