THE CALL FOR MEN

MEN WANTED TO-DAY I

CALL TO VOLUNTEERS

Wellington is 30 short on paper for the new draft of reinforcements, which goes into camp to-day, but actually tlio position is rather worse—about 120. The Recruiting Office has J now_ got down to the odds and ends of its list of men whose names were down for previous drafts, who for various reasons did not go into • training, and of these many have enlisted elsewhere, others have disappeared, and so on. Tlie fact of the matter now is that the Defence Department will be greatly relieved and extremely pleased if a batch of young men fit and willing to go into camp, but who are not down for service yet, will come forward at the Garrison Hall to-day, and by their appearance and decision enable Wellington to fulfil its obligations. LOCAL MEETINGS. The Hoii. A. L. Hcrdman and Messrs. F. W. Mouton and R. R. Martin, juii., will address a recruiting meeting in the Roseneath Schoolroom this evening. Dates aro advertised for meetings at Khandallah, Paraparaumu, Kavori, Newtown, Wadestawn, and Brooklyn. The Mauriceville County Council, states our special correspondent, has resolved to_ do all in its power to assist the recruiting scheme, but deplores the fact that the Government has not brought down a* Military Service _ Bill. Owing to the prospect of there being a shortage in tho Fourteenth Reinforcements, every available recruit is being called up in the Wairarapa, and the I original quota is being almost doubled. 'file next recruiting meeting arranged by the Wellington Committee will be held at the Roseneath Schoolroom on Monday evening, when speechco appropriate to the occasion will be delivered by the Hon. A. L. Herdman, Mr. F. W. Manton, and Mr. R. R. Martin, junior (a returned soldier). The committee has decided that a pleasant variation at the meetings to be field in variou o places throughout the pionth would be the interspersal between the speeches of patriotic songs, and request any lady gentleman willing to assist in this direction to call on or communicate with the secretary of the committee, Mr. R. R. Martin, at tho Town Hall. LOCAL ENLISTMENTS The following additional recruits registered in Wellington City have been passed as physically fit:— Sheldrake, Ernest, fitter (Monnteds). Speeches were delivered by the Mayor and others, and as the result 66 men came forward, 42 being accepted. THE NATIONAL REGISTER DEFAULTERS TO BE PROSECUTED. The task of compiling the National Register is now nearing completion. "The work was by the demands made by the Recruiting Board for lists of names and addresses of al! men of military age in particular districts," said the Hon. G. W. Russell last night. "Tlie remainder of the analysis of the names sent in is now being proceeded with, and immediately it is completed the list will be checked with lists already in the hands of tho Department from various sources, of names of persons who should have registered, but who had not done so. As soon as this check lias been made, those who have shirked their obligation to register will be prosecuted wholesale throughout the Dominion." Mr. Russell added that there seemed to be no doubt that the number of defaulters was considerable. "THE WRONG CLASS" By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, March 3. Some pointed comment was indulged ill when the rolls for the use of the Gonville Recruiting Committee were laid oil the tablo at tho Town Board's monthly meeting. The consensus of opinion was that the rolls contained the ivrong class of men, and that the names of men who refused to serve should have been forwarded, instead of those who expressed their willingness to serve. All that the members of tho board at present could recognise on tlio lists were married men who had families, and many men who were over 45, some being over 60, wliilo the names of some young fellows more eligible for service were not in. eluded. Tlio chairman sxovoasetl the view, and this was endorsed by members present,

that to canvass the men included in the official lists would be to induce the wrong class of men to enlist, and that while ho would be pleased to canvass tlioso men wiio would not serve in any capacity, ho would do his best uudcr the scheme now before him, although convinced it was not the right one. Conscription would be a fairer method, and it would, too, do away with the feeling existing in some quarters that the working classes ivero supplying most of the recruits. A committee was set up to assist the Wangamii Borough Council in whatever scliemo of recruiting was adopted by that body. DERBY GROUP SYSTEM WANTED By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright Perth, March 3. The annual conference of the Liberal League urged systematisation of rocruiting. The Chamber of Commerce has demanded compulsory service, owing to the impossibility of protecting the primary industries under the present system. The chamber has recommended Lord Derby's group system. SLUMP IN RECRUITING i By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, March a. Thero is considerable comment regarding the slump in recruiting.
