The following drivers of motor-cars were fined"2os., and 17s. 6d._ costs for ' exceeding the speed, limit within - the borough :Kalph Muirhead, E. W. Leader, D. Chapman, J. D. Phillips, E. J. Arlow and Thomas Pritchard. With the ! • exception of the two last-named, defen- , dants were ordered to pay witnesses' expenses. J. J. Griffen, for whom ' Mr. M'Grath appeared, called evidence to! prove that his speed, according to his , speedometer was only 15 miles per hour. The Magistrate being satisfied tliaj; defendant believed his .speed to.be below the limit, the case against'him was di&. . missed., Leonard Cloake was proceeded against for failing to register his motor-van f under ifce Lower Hutt heavy traffic bylaw. Defendant, contended that his vehicle was licensed at Petone and as that came within the five-mile-radius there was no need for a separate license. The Magistrate reserved his decision on >■ the legal point. A prohibition order was issued-against J. Moroney, on the application of - his father. ' • • ' Henry Phillips, for whom Mr. P.-W. Jackson appeared] was charged with assaulting Arthur Jones, who was represented by Mr. J. J. M'Grath. After hearing the evidence, defendant was fined 40s. and/costs, in. default'fourteeri days' imprisonment. Daisy Jones was fined'lOs., and ordered to pay costs, for assaulting Theodora Phillips. - ■ •
