IS THE WAR A PUNISHMENT FOR SINS?
Sir,—ln yesterday's paper is an excellent letter from ■ Sir. Blackburne, dealing with our more recent national errors in China and India, which many like Lord Elgin deeply deplore, and for which our country has certainly suffered. But "Rusticus" may still ask 'How do we know?" "Is it just theological pretty talk?" May Ibe permitted a few lines to answer this query? One needs to study history from the beginning to know the reason why—to read of God's dealings with his ancient people, the Israelite*, their constant i'aliing away from Him, and their discipline in. the wilderness and under judges. their frequent idolatry and torgetfulness of t God under their kings, and consequent wars, and at last their captivity in Babylon—"great Babylon" —of wh'ich Nebuchadnezzar was so proud, but who had to leave it until lie, too, acknowledged that "the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men." Surely this is tho lesson that history teaches also.—l am, etc., ItUSTICA.
