MANUKA AND p TOANA HELD UP BY It was after miduiglit before the Manuka, which. wa6 timed'to leave for Sydney at 8 o'clock, got away last night. Loading operations detained her until about 11 o clock, when it was found that three firemen and one trimmer had failed to. put m.an appearance. The Moana. which got away a few minutes after midnight, was also detained by the absence of firemen. A BUSY DAY. . , Yesterday was an exceptionally busy day on the wharves. Two liners-the Rotorua and the Baron Ocilvy-arnved during the day, while tlie Moana. from ban Francisco, the Westralia from south, bound for northern ports and Sydney, the Manuka from Lytteiton, en route for Sj-duey direct, and the Flora, from Auckland, bound lor the couth were als>o among the arrivals. W the exception of t'no two liners they all departed again during the mgnt. THE 'FRISCO BOAT. R.M.S. Moana arrived in port early yesterday morning .from San Francisco, via Papeete and Ravotonga. The vessel left the Californian port on. February 2, arriving at Papeete after a calm trip on *epruary 14. Earotongn' was reached on February 17, and her voyage to Islington was continued tho- same day. Besides 1003 tons of merchandiiß the Moana brought a large' Quantity of fruit. She left for Lytteiton at an' early hour this morning. BARON OGJLVY IN PORT. The Vacuum Oil Company's chartered steamer Baron Ogilvy arrived in port yesterday' from New York, via Lytteiton. Alter discharging lier Wellington cargo of case oil, the steamer will proceed to Napier and Gisborne. Captain J. Thompson, master of the steamer, has associated with him the following officerst-Chief officer, Mr. C. Thompson; second, Mr. T. G. Mlver; third. Mr. A. C. MacPherson; chief engineer Mr. J. 11. Grey; second. Mr. T Mackay; third, Mr. A. Fisher; fourth, Mr. W. Boning. Mr. Arthur Seddon is wireless officer, and Mr. F. 0. Bcrtsh is chit? steward. NIIvAU'S SPECL4.L TRIP. Messrs. Baunatyne and Co., in conjunction with the Labour Department, have decided to dispatch the Nikau to Motucka on Sunday moriiing at 6 o'clock on a special excursion trip for hop-pickers. The ex-German steamer Walkure, which was sunk by the German cruisers in Papeete Harbour early in the war, has, thanks to American enterprise, been refloated and recommissionea. The submerged vessol was purchased by an American syndicate, who with characteristic resourcefulness salvaged her"and put her in readiness for sea. It was ascertained by' those on board tho Moana (which arrived from San Francisco yesterday) that the salvaged vessel (rechristened Republic) was berthed at the wharf in Papeete ready to sail for San Francisco. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. F. Cleuuel, second engineer of the Kegulus, and Mr. C. J. Tully, of tho Waverley. have exchanged positions. Mr. Skene-Smith, lately appointed wireless operator on the Mararoa, has.left that vessel to take up a similar post on a special service shir. ' Tho Paloona, .which will arrive from southern porU this morning, is listed to sail for Melbourne on Waturday. She should get away about noon. ' The Karu, which arrived from Greymouth yesterday, will be dispatched for New Plymouth to-day. Due from northern ports and Auckland at 5 o'clock this evening, the Tarawera is scheduled to clear for the south later in the night. Tlio Defender arrived from Greymouth yesterday witli a cargo of wool and timber. After discharging tho wool she left for Jtirauiar to complete discharge. Shs is expected to get away for the West Coaet about noon to-morrow. Tile liner Rotorua returned to 'Wellington from the south yesterday, and berthed at the Glasgow Wharf to complete loading. Tuesday, February 29, is tho date fixed for her departure. | Tho Sl.ar of India, which left Wellington on January 6 for London, via ports, has arrived at her destination. A telegraphic message states that the lliniitnngi arrived at Lytteiton yesterday morning from Pitt Island. She was to have sailed again last evening for tho Cliatlianis. The Flora arrived, yiitcnlay from Auckland. After taking in cargo she left for Timaru, Oaniaru .and the llluff early this morning. The Westralia arrived in port yesterday from southern' ports.
