GERMAN WAR LOSSES
ANALYSED BY HI LA IRE BELLOC. j By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. February 24, 4 p.m.) London, February 23. Mr. Hilairo Bclloc contributes to "Land and Water" a well-seasoned analysis of the German losses. After a visit to the best sources of information in Europe, and a thorough study of the facts, he 6ays it has been proved that the number of Germans killed to the end of 1015 exceeded one million.- The total appearing in the corrected German official lists is 651,768, but these are inaccurate and incomplete. He estimates that IGOjOOO dead are included in tho lists of tho missing. Mr, Bclloc's inquiries showed that while tho privato lists of the dead did not differ materially from the official lists at tho beginning of the war, a discrepancy appears later, becoming more marked during 1015. The official lists show a dcojino, and tho private lists no decline. The official. lists, quoted argely in Europe 'and America, give an immense advantage to the enemy's side. Tho roal losses are shown in the private lists, which are compiled from tho most accurate source—the individual notices of deaths which are sent to the families. Mr. Belloc says: "My own investigations prove the falsity of the German figures." Ho asserts that he discovered that nearly 70 per cent, of tho names on the French lists of prisonerr actually in the French camps, and who had been taken from distinct regiments, were omitted from the German lists.
