NOTES AND COMMENTS
. IBT 'jLR.VCOI.I Our special correspondent, telegraphing from Wanganui last evening, states that the weather gives every indication of being fine for Cup day. The racing will commence with the Stewards' Handicap, and in view of Multiplication's form in the Douro Cup, when he carried 9st. 121b. and ran a mile in lmin. 14sec., lio may lie the choice, with Princess Moutoa also' in demand. In the Petre Hack Handicap, backers may fasten on Bonny Dream, who has extraordinary pace, and has hitherto taken part in weight-for-agc events. In tho Westmero Hurdles, Black Northern is top weight. with list. 71b. Were tho unreliable Aucklander to do his best the others could stay in their boxes for all the chance they would have, but for a long time past tho Salvadan gelding has refused tD try. This is to be his last meoting unless ho shows improved form. Styrax was very sore after work-ing-yesterday, but Master Strou;an, Collector, and Glenorchy have all recent form to recommend them. This event is the most open of the day.
Florist is a better stayer than the others engaged in the Hack Welter Handicap, aud she may cany most support on the machine.
The following are the probable starters and their riders in the Cup:— Colonel Soult (J. o'Shea) Bst. 71b. Eiuperador (B. Deeley) Sst. 61b. Welcome Nugget (W. Bell) Bst. 31b. Multiply (C. Price) Sst. 31b. Master Lupin (H. Young) ...... 7et. 111b. Lady Penury (A. Reed) 7st. Gib. Mulling-ar (T. Chaplin) 7st. 41b. Sir Alba (E. Reed) % 7st. 41b. Tangihou (G. Clarke) ...% 7st. 31b. El Gallo (C. Emerson) 7st. 01b. Moulu (C. Larmont) fist. 111b. Ladify (B. Morris) 6st. 71b.
The top-weight is working very well, and may be well supported. He has been consistently unlucky in his races, and may do better to-day. Emperador's great mile on Tuesday is still the talk of the town, and he will bo fancied by a great many. Master Lupin looks better than ever he did, and may have a large following. Lady Penury is very sore, ana of the others Mullingar and El Gallo road best. Emerson will ride tho lastnamed 41b. overweight. As the race is not, likely. to be a fast one, it \vill be all in favour of Emperador, who lias most pace, and will be suited by the circular track.
For the Juvenile Handicap, Interlude will be withdrawn and started in the flying Handicap. The favourite may be Moutoa Queen, 7st. 131b., but. tho English colt, Jack Jellicoe, 7st. 511)., can gallop very fast.
The Fordell mare Ararat may lie tho goods in, the Wiritoa Hack Hand'icap, and in the Flying Handicap Nones, Sst. 121b., and Tree Lucerne, 7st. 131b., may I havo most friends.
■ Reval, who was sold to Mr. C. Studholnio in Dunedin on Friday for 500 guineas, was formerly owned in partnership by Mr. Studholme and the late Ifr. E. H. Reid, of Timaru.
Prior to losing the services of Martian Maid in tho Dunedin Cup, Mr. W. H. .Hazlett had similar experiences during the past three years with Astrakhan, Cocoon, and Sir Brigid.
