NEW RECRUITING SCHEME
.- —* SUPPORTED BY KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL. Recruiting was discussed at last night's meeting of the Karori Borough' Council, when the circulars from tlio Recruiting Committee were dealt with. 'There was also a letter from the Prime Minister urging the assistance of the council in the recruiting of men for tho 14th Reinforcements, and a ; telegram explaining that the recruiting schemo did not necessarily bind members of local bodies to take part in a personal canvass. The Mayor (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) said he thought councillors were all acquainted with the position of affairs, and without further preliminary discussion he would like someone to put forward a resolution.
_Councillor J. W. Henderson moved: "mat this council is very anxious that the required number of officers and men promised to the Imperial authorities Gliould be raised on the voluntary enlistment principle, and rejoices to know that it has been successful so far, but if found necessary to adopt the compulsory system, would loyally support it. Being so intimately associated with tho City of Wellington in such matters, it could not take separate action, but will gladiy co-operate with the authorities in tho City of Wellington, and other adjacent local bodies in supporting the efforts of the Recruiting Committee." This was seconded by the Mayor and carried unanimously.
The following further resolution was passed :■ "That this council resolves jitself into a committee,_ with _ power to add to its number, with His Worship the Mayor as convener; to act in this borough as a suh-eommittee_ to assist tho larger committeo acting in the district."

Representatives of local bodies concerned in the Government recruiting scheme resolved: "That, while regretting the Government does not see its way clear to bring in a Military Service Bill, the present committ-ee -will, in the meantime, further the recruiting sohemo in every possible way." WESTLAND TAKING 'ACTION. Hokitika, February 22. All local bodies in Westkmd have agreed to support tiie "Government's recruiting scheme. At a meeting of held this evening to organise united aition, it was decided to. hold a National Service Day throughout Westland on some day in Maroli, with a- mass meeting at Hokitika. It was resolved to ask a momber of the Government Recruiting Board to attend «nd address tlio assemblage. 11 is also intended to ask returned soldiers to npeak. The Government will be asked io arrange a suitable train wrvice for Ithe convenience of country visitors, and declare a public holiday throughout the district; also to organise a military parade and to take ither steps to malco the gathering impressive of •thn needs nf tno nation. ,
The speakers were unanimous in support of organising a monster gathering for the purpose in view.
