Jones, W.M.R., M.8., to B Squadron, 10th. Tenth in Trentham. The Tenth Infantry Reinforcements, who completed their march from Featherston to Trentham on Saturday, will not have many idle moments this week. From daylight till dark the roar and rattle of rifles on the ranges was a continuous sound yesterday, except for the short respite at midday. The Tenth are firing their advanced or soldier's course of musketry, and in the hot weather it is arduous work, lying out in. tho sun all day. But the 'men are keen. By contrast with the Thirteenths, who have been in camp for a fortnight, the Tenth are weatherbeaten, hardy-looking soldiers—as, indeed, they should be, for they are Hearing the • completion of their training. Yet the Thirteenth have made remarkable progress during the short period they have been in camp. In fact, a few days after their entry they were mnrching with wonderful precision and swing, which promises well for their rapid advance in other branches of training. The Big March. Four infantry Reinforcements linvo now crossed tho Rimutakas on the march. At the completion of each of these route marches well-deserved praise has been bestowed upon the soldiers. Strangely enough, however, there were, men in both the Ninth and Tenth who expressed disappointment at the length of tho march, and the easiness of the second portion, which is the downhill march from tho -Summit to Kaitoko, ' *'ve done longer inarches in tha old
volunteer days," said one. "Of course this is a good try-out for soldiers as a beginning. But it is a mistake to lot the men think it is a supreme test. The part from Featherston Camp to the Summit is a real, hard go, but it's shorty and when we've done that the rest is too easy. .Simply a brisk walk down the hill roads. By far the most interesting part of the tliree-days' outing is, to my mind, the scouting and manoeuvres done 011 the second day and night, and the night attack. No 0110 fell out on the hill, when the Tenth came up, and that's good, right enough, lor a man might get knocked out°in the first burst if he wasn't fit." Others have expressed tho same opinion- that the march is a good one as a beginning, but is not a supreme test. Rowland, Jeweller, 90 Manners Street, is the firm who are giving 15 per cent.
