Major M'Xaught, Hawera, who hat been group commander in Llie Taranaki district for the past twelve montlis, has been advised that lie is to lie truhsferred to Pdmerston North, when ho will take over the sick and wounded department for all the areas ill the Wellington military district. During his residence in Hawera, Maior M'Naught has proved himself to be an efficient- officer, and has become very popular with the citizens. He is to he succeeded by Lieutenant Cosgrovc, N.P.S.C., who will take over the command as from March 1. Lieut. Cosgrove has arrived in Hawera.
Mr. L. F. Watkins, of the Executive Committee of the Patriotic Industrial jixhihition, has been confined to his bed with- an attack of gastritis sinco Friday last. He was slightly better yesterday.
In connection with the death of Corporal E. C. Beresford-AVilkinson, who was killed in action in Egypt on Christ- {?/!?. . Ua - Vl '" s mother, Mrs. BcresfordWilkinson, of Rcefton, has received the following letter from the Rev. Clement Hoiiclien, Church of England Chaplain of the-New Zealand Rifle Brigade in Egypt:—-'•You will hav.e heard long since of the death of your brave bo.v. J liere had been a sharp encounter with the beniissi, and several oF our men wore badly hit. Your son, Corporal E. U Beresford-Wilkinson, made a valiant attempt to bring in one of theso wounded men, Corporal I<\ 0. Bridgeman. but in doiiiji so he received a shot in tlio leg, and immediately after another shot through the heart ; his sufferings were thus very short. We sholl all miss him exceedingly, though his memory will never die:'and while we (leeplv sympathise with you. we are proud that E. C. Beresford-Wilkinson was one of the' N.Z. Rifle Brigade." Uma Taipila, one of the bestknown and most popular Otaki Natives, died on Friday at Te Horo. Deceased, who was second son of the late Beam Taijjua, M.P., came of a distinguished fcmily, noted raiigatiras of the Ngatiraukawa tribe (says the "Otaki Mail"). Ho Jived all his life in Otaki. 'Uma was for years a prominent member of the old Ivia Toa Football Club, and in his palmy days was a, brilliant player. H' represented Horowhenua on many ocq sions. Deceased, who was about fqi years of age, leaves a widow ant' family of four young children. Mr. H. 'Te-ipua is the only brother of ceased.
