WEALTH IN DAIRYING
OPENING OF, SUITABLE LAND. One of the chief, institutions of tho district is the Raetihi Co-operative Dairy Company. ' The dairy factory, which is in tho town, is up-to-date, having all modern butter-making machinery and appliances. From seventeen to twelve years ago the factory was a private concern, but for the last dozen years the settlers have run it on co-operative lines.
The present number of suppliers is about forty. Tho average output is shirty to forty tons of butter per year. The company works > oil the _ home separation principle, which, in this district, lias proved quite ' satisfactory. During the present season not less than Is. Id. tor butter-fat has been paid out to suppliers, and as high as Is. 2d. In view of the fact that tho company pays or allows for cartage at the rate of -sd. per lb., £d. has to be added to these prices. Dairy fanning has proved very profitable to those who have taken it up in thisdistrict, and the country has reached a stage where every year more stumping and ploughing will be done, and the number of farmers will increase. It is certain that dairying will become increasingly popular and profitable here. A large area of country right adjoining the town, and in which the mills will shortly be operating, will soon bo available for dairying, to which it is eminently suited.
