NEW RECRUITING SCHEME
VIEWS HELD IN WANGANUI. By TeleCTaph.—Prcsß Association. Wanganul, February 16. A representative meeting of members of local bodies, in the Wanganui district was .held to-night to disouss the Recruiting Board's circular. "On the motion of the Mayor it was unanimously resolved "That this meeting is oE opinion that the exigencies of the military situation. demand greater efforts than can be obtained by voluntary service, arid that if satisfactory results be not achieved under the present system it urges the Government to follow- the- lead of Great Britain and establish some form of compulsory service iu the Dominion " :. A second motion, moved by Mr. W. A. Veifcch, M.P., "That wealth andwar profits should be taxed on a graduatedscale.toJmect the cost, of the war, was also unanimously carried._ It was decided in the interim to use all efforts to stimulate recruiting. SUPPORT FROM OAMARU. (By Tel<#raph.—Press .Association.) •••■ '■• Oamaru, February 16. The'Oamafu Borough Council and the Waitalu County Council have decided to give the new recruiting scheme every assistance, both to form themselves into a recruiting committee, although several members, while agreeing to assist, favoured straight out compulsion. A public meeting called for last night was poorly attended, and was adjourned for a week. :
