Association was' opened on tho Solway Showgrounds tol .day ; in. ideal weather. '. The grounds j '■were-in perfect order, Mid tho appointi ■ merit's .'all that could be desired. The i attendance was well up to the average, ; . and stock-breeders were present from ; as far north as Auckland and as far south as Southland. -A feature of .the show, as in former years, was the spleni. did exhibition of sheep and fat cattle. SHEER CLASSES, In Lincoln sheep, Messrs. ' Henry ; Gaisford (Hawke's Bay), W. Perry, and I Bland Rayne'r were most successful. ' Mr. Gaisford was awarded the cham- : ..pionship in same, and Mr. Bland Kayj ner in ewes. The judge remarked that i ..ho had never seen-; a better all-round exhibition in this section. Mr. S. R. ; ./••Lancaster., of Mariawatu, was . the sole _i '"-exhibitor iii English':Leicesters, and he i /."was awarded nine firsts and two cliam- ' ipionships. Mr.'' JM.''Welch' took four i .firsts and two'championships in Border ~-Leicestcrs. _ The Romney Marsh divi- ; Vsion was the strongest ever seen in >'• : the "Wairarapa, and the judge stated ! i'that he had never witnessed such a fine Collection. Mr. W. Perry was awardved both championships, with fair speci•i mens of the breed. Mr. Perry took jfour firsts and several second prizes. Mr. Ernest Short, of Feilding, took two | : /lirsts, and Mr. J. Corpe, of Feilding, i / two'firsts. Southdowns were a good | i "even- lot, and the honours ill this class ' Yyr'ere divided between Richmond and J 'SFernie (Hastings), J. Knight (Feild:?n«l W. Howard Booth. The j-chanrpionship in rams fell to Mr. ; and in ewes to Messrs. Richpuond and S«rnie.;. Thore was only a \small entry in Shropshires, and Mr. W. ! iißayner took two firsts.

CATTLE SECTION. The cattle section was well up to the .'standard of previous years. In purebred, Shorthorns, the principal prize•iakers were: Mr. Douglas M'Lean (Hatfke's Bay), Sir Walter Buchanan, £W.-vHoward.Booth, and Jolrn M'Mastor. ' Frank A'rm- • strong (Akitio) exhibited a. fine collec- ■' tion. of' foiled "Angus, 'for'- which he • secured the highest honours and. championship. ... S. R. Lancaster (Manawatu) almost swept the board in Jersey, taking.both' championships. L. and S. Eivers and It: Melvin were also exhibitors of- Holstein -Friesians, which were":of g-ood quality. Mr. Melvin was awarded the-championship for bull. In . fat cattle,. T. Saunders.... (Manawatu) took -the championship for bull. Si- . Walter Buchanan, W. Howard Booth, and Frank Armstrong were chief prizetakors in other classes. Mr. Frank Armstrong had a, fine pair of Polled Angus 'bullocks,-which carried off first honours 'in. the class. HORSE CLASSES. The horse' classes' wore not numerically, strong, but there- were some good

exhibits of hacks and ponies. Most of the horses in the hack section will he judged to-morrow. There was a good representative exhibit of draughts. The Donald Estate's "Bueklyvie Favourite" was awarded the championship for draught stallion. OTHER EXKIBfTS. The' exhibition of pigs was only medium, and calls for 110 comment. The class for flogs, of which there is a good entry, will not be judged until the second day. Agriculture ami industrial exhibits have filled the agricultural hall, and the cereals shown aro a credit to tho district. DAIRY PRODUCE. The. first prize for butter for export was.awarded to' the Mauriceville Dairy Company, while tho Masterton Company took first for butter for home consumption. In the white cheddar cheese class'the Parkvale Company was first and -the Kakaramea Company second. SHEEP DOC TRIAL. Ail innovation to-day was the sheep dog trial, which was watched with interest.' The winner of the trial was owned by Mr. C. C. Hay, and worked like a piece of machinery. THE COMPETITIONS. The competitions resulted as follow: — Maiden Jumping.—J. ; Tilson's Morphia,.!; Mrs; V. ,B. Vallance's H-e----<iuest,, J;-N.. Bicknell's Rohutu, 3; Leaping Competition (hunters' style). .—J. J.. Bryce's Twilight, 1; H. Has-'sail's.-Micky*Ereo, 2; It. D. Morrison's Grey .Dawii, 3: Four hundred mounted troopers from Feathers ten Camp arrived on the ground in the afternoon. They will parade in the ring to-morrow. The Hon. James Allen (Minister of Dcfence) will also be present, and will make the presentation of tho D.C.M. to Trooper Frank O'Connor.
