$ RENTS AND SALARIES. ■ In Section 30 of the Public Service Act, 1912, it is provided that "If any officer not. entitled to quarters is allowed to use, for tho purpose of residence, any building belonging to the Government, the Commissioner may direct that a fair and reasonable sum as rent thereof be deducted from such officer's salary, and the amount of such sum shall be fixed by the Commissioner" ; ... The Public Service Commissioner has considered it desirable to adopt a uniform method of charging rentals to officers of Departments, and has gazetted notico of the following principles as to such charges:— (1). An officer, whether married or unmarried, scut to a. station where ■ quarters aro provided, must occupy the came and pay the rent specified. ('>) No rent will bo charged w-hero the accommodation provided is insufficient for the officer's family, and where, 'as a- consequence, the officer lias to vent a house for his family. (3) In the case of buildings occupied by more than 0110 officer, rent shall bo proportionately allocated among ' them. (4) Rental will be computed at an annual rate payable monthly, and, except under special circumstances herein provided for, will be not exceeding ten (10) per cent of tho officer's salary. (5) Where fuel or lighting is provided nc Government expense, an additional charge equal to the actual cost will be made for the same. AVhoro tho salary lit present paid is based on the supplies boing furnished by Government, an equivalent addition will be made to the classified rate of pay. (6) The Commissioner, in any case in which he i.S'of opinion that the enforcement of the above-mentioned directions would he inequitable, may waive or vary any or all of them.
