A NEW FIRE STATION

MR. TONKS AN'D THE COUNCIL. •At the meeting of the City Council, held last evening, the members were , inclined to give short shrift to Mr. William Tonks's objection to the erection of a new fire station 011 the Town Belt at the top pf Constable Street Sir. Tonks had asked that the mattei he deferred for a fortnight, but tlif Mayor reported that ho had snggestec to' Mr. Tonks that ho should cont'ei with his (Mr. Tonks's) lawyer, Mr.T P.; Martin, but he had raised objec tions to such a course. The erection oi t this station was an absolute necessity Councillor W. H. P. Barber said thai ihey had a letter from the Govern uient asking why the station should b( erected on the site. He laid the re sponsihility of trouble 011 those causing any delay in the erection of the station It was not as ir they were taking away anything—they were effecting ai improvement. Councillor Luckie sak it. was a perfect farce that a work s< urgent should be held up at the belies of' Mr. Tonks. .Councillor Hutcheson: Go on with thi job 1 Councillor Luckie: That's what would advise. It's too ridiculous'! Le the council take the necessary step, to allow of the work going on, and le Mr. Tonks do what he pleases in tin matter.
