Wingate at the meeting of the Manawatu Farmers' Union on Saturday. He instanced the case of a .farmer at Hunterville who had decided to experiment with lime 011 his oats. .He had applied eight cwt. to the acre, and as the result had been able to graze the land almost bare two or three times, after wliicli he had allowed the oats to grow, and had taken three tons of chaff to the aero from it at the end of 1 the season. In. a letter to Mr. W. H; Field, M.P., the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W; D. S. The man referred to. is Mr. David ■Miller, and he is taking lip his duties at once umfcr the Biological Section of the Department., He.will visit the principal ' phormium fields as early as possible, and pursue his investigations forthwith. The question of whether the hemp millers or the owners of phormium fields, or either of them, will be called upon' to contribute to the cost of the work will he considered when the expense involved is definitely known. I trust that the resu'lt of this arrangement will be the-dovising of practical measures ;for the control of the pest."
