A MATTER FOR THE DEFENCE DEPARTMENT.

Sir, —I notice our Expeditionary soldiers marching in khaki and carrying substantial kits in the excessive heat of these summer days, and this with the swathing of- the puttees must tell heavily on tno men. I hope it may not be thought to be beyond reason to suggest that the men might be supplied .with an extra suit of light ■ clothing, suitable for use in the heat of summer. If there be any real objection to such a course I think the Department should make it I am not aware whether a supply is found for them while on active service in Egypt, but if it be so then there ought to be some way of following the example here.— I am, otc., J. HERBERT HANKINS.
