CONSCRIPTION OF WEALTH.

Sir, —I desire to intimate tb rough your columns tliat "for-the future I do not intend to subscribe to any patriotio fund. My object, as far as I am able to express it, is that .1 dosiro to make a personal protest against the give-what-you-please style of raising monej. that at present characterises patriotic effort. I am fully in sympathy with the Wounded Soldiers' Fund and other causes for ' which money is being raised, but I feel that if we are to impose compulsion to get men it is only . fair to apply conscription to wealth. The voluntary system has "resulted in men shirking their duty to fight, but , the fight shirkers are not a 6 bad ae the money shirkers. If I gave all that [ had the men that are earning com- • pound interest on their blood money would laugh at me for a patriotic fool. If I refuse to give anything the Government will be forced to take from me what is my fair contribution to the ' war'funds, and thev cannot touch me without laying hands on the bank deposits of some of the other fellows. That is what I want to isee. I want to part up my fair share, everything I . have if it is necessary to save the'eountry from the Germans, but let the Government take what it wants from me and every other man. —I am, etc., ' V J. A. RIDDELL. "Gurteenahilla," Jan. 31, 1916.
