February 4, 6 ( .0 p.m.) London, February 3. _ The survivors of the steamer Woodfield have arrived at Plymouth. They rccount that a German submarine attacked the steamer fourteen miles east of Gibraltar, peppering her with shells. Tho steamer's guns were maimed, but the submarine kept out of range, and continued firing, and twice hit the steamer. Captain-. Hughes and other officers had a narrow escape. Tho Arab firemen deserted tho stokehold, and the chief engineer stoked for two hours. _ A shell burst in tho stokehold, when eighf'of the crew were killed and fourteen wounded. The captain, realising that further resistance was hopeless, took to the boats, and abandoned the ship, the submarine torpedoing her. The crew reached the North African coast, where the Moors captured them. They were released on a heavy ransom being paid.
