Mr. Candler, the British war correspondent, states that a rise in tho river inundated the Turkish positions at Kut-el-Amari. The enemy evacuated the entire length of trenches on our north-west front, falling back two thousand yards. General Townshend's reconnoitring patrol advanced twelve hundred yards, and occupied twenty-two rows of deep trenches, and miles of communications honeycombing the whole position. General Townshend sends wireless messages daily to the forces advancing up the Tigris. RUSSIANS COMMENCE THE ASSAULT ON ERZERUM ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) ' . ti Petrograd, February 3. llie .Russians .have commenced assaults on Erzerum. Tho country is roadless, and the cold is most intense. The troops are compelled to drag the jruns through passes 9000 ft. high. _ file Turks have fourteen divisions on the Persian front, also irregulars and Kurds. Tho Russians assert that several regiments have been annihilated. Though it is a long way froni Erzerum to Constantinople, the Turks are rushing reinforcements to Armenia. /
