$ DKOfiYNED IN HtITT RIVER. At abclut 6 a.m. yesterday morning a .young man named Reginald Mumford, «on of (Mr. Geo. Mumford, Waterloo Road, Lower Hutt, whilst bathing iu tho Huftt Iliver, near to the Slain .Bridge, {Suddenly threw tip his arms and isanlt iiu about 12ft. of water. The alarm was given by a youth named I<\ Edclip, ;.and Constables Cameron and ,f3taniland were soon upon the scene. .As the body could not bo seen, Messrs. \V. Maiilo, of Alicetown,' and IL. G. tSemmeJl, of Lower Hutt, were sent for, the lirsjt-namcd being an expert diver, tn the space of a few minutes, Mr. Maule -succeeded in locating the body and bringing it to the surface, and with the assistance of Constable Staniland and Mr. Gcmmell conveyed it to the river bank. Artificial respiration was promptjy applied by Mr. T. Slinn, and later bv Dr. Miraras, but without result, and the latter pronounced life extinct. The body was conveyed to the Central Hotel, and an inquest will he held to-morrow afternoon. The deceased, who had been employed bv the Wellington Harbour Board," has'onlv recently learned to swim. He had crossed the river once, and it was on tho way back that he suddenly collapsedl The scene of the fatality is near to the Hutt Bridge, where a bath-Ing-shed I*3 erected, and scores of residents bathe daily.
